The Nutrient Cycle:
The nutrient cycle describes how nutrients move from the physical environment into living organisms, and are recycled back to the physical environment. The nutrients are chemical elements that animals, and also plants, need for growth. Nutrients used by plants to make their own food, by the process of photosynthesis, are the elements, carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. However the elements are taken up as carbon dioxide from the air, and water by the roots. These elements make up 95-98% of the mass in organisms. However these elements are not all that is needed in order for an organism to be living, there is more to it. There are more elements that are necessary to fuel life on earth, these elements are, nitrogen and phosphorus. These are important to plant growth and agriculture, without these plants wouldn't be able to be producers and make their own food to feed other, and for organisms to get their food from. " Nutrients in the soil are taken up by plants, which are consumed by animals, and excreted again by them-or they are released back into the environment when organisms die. Microorganisms in the soil break down this matter, and make nutrients once again that are available in their mineral form, which makes it possible for plants to take them up again." (SSWN). Chimpanzees get their food from producers or herbivores, since they are omnivores. In order for chimps to have something to eat plants have to make their own food by taking in carbon dioxide, sunlight and water to make the food, plants themselves give off oxygen and food for other organisms to feed off of. Chimps also eat other animals who also feed themselves off of plants or producers. In order for animals to live and they need the nutrient cycle. Oxygen needs to be given back to the air just as carbon dioxide is taken away. Animals breath in the oxygen given off by plants. Once an animal dies it gives nitrogen to the soil. Basically nitrogen is given off to the air by plants also, and bacteria fixes nitrogen for plants to reuse.
