Chimpanzees Physical Adaptations: Chimpanzees have many physical adaptations, that help they adapt and survive in the Congo Basin Rainforest. To start off with the most obvious, chimps have thickset body with long arms, short legs and no tails. Most of their body is covered with long black hair, except for their face, ears, finger and toes, those are bare, hairless. The long black hair on their body's help keep them warm. They have an opposable big toe on their foot, which serve them just like a thumb on a hand. The big toe grabs branches while it is climbing on trees and it can hold other items while it's climbing. However the disadvantage of having the big toe is that it doesn't help at all while its walking on the ground. Chimpanzees have sharp canine teeth that help them in various ways. When they want to put on a threatening display to intimidate others, they flash their teeth in a big grin. However wild chimps don't smile when they are happy, they only show their sharp canines to scare others off. To chimps their canines are very useful when they catch their prey, such as monkeys, pigs or antelopes. Chimpanzees have long, strong arms. An adult is five to seven times stronger than a human being. Their strong arms help them climb and swing on trees. Chimpanzee's shoulders are designed in a way that help them swing from branch to branch in the forest. Chimps have hands which allow them to grip firmly onto branches and be able to pick up objects. The canines that chimps have help them scare others off that may threaten them, and their adaptations to getting a firm grip of branches and being able to swing on them helps them escape situations which might cause them their life. They need their or these specific adaptations to survive, the thin black hair on their body keeps them warm in case of cold temperature, they won't freeze and die.
Chimpanzees Behavioral Adaptations: Chimpanzees have several behavioral adaptations, which help them survive in the Congo Basin Rainforest. Nest building would one out of so many behavioral adaptations of chimpanzees. In order for them to avoid predators during the night and sleep safely, they build nest towards the top of the trees. To prepare themselves for going to sleep at night, they each collect some leaves and branches and build a nest on the trees in which they will sleep. Chimps live in groups called troops, which is made up of 30 to 80 individuals, they are able to protect their food resources and territory. Another behavioral adaptation is that chimpanzees hunt, in several ways, for their own food. They use different types of tools to hunt for their food. They shape and use sticks, such as grass stems or twigs, to get insects out of their nests and dig grubs out of logs. They also poke the grass stems or twigs in termite or ant nests and they eat the insects that stick to it. Sticks are also used by them to catch fish for them to eat. Another tool they use is stones, they use stones to smash open nuts for them to eat. They also use large quantity of leaves as sponges to soak up or gather drinkable water. Something interesting about chimps is that they can be taught to use basic human sign language. All these behavioral adaptation used by chimpanzees are useful for their survival in the rainforest, these adaptations help them get food in order to stay alive and sleeping on the top of the trees also, to not get eaten by leopards at nights or by any other predator and also staying with a group of chimpanzees for protection of food resources and territory. Staying on the top of trees also helps them hide from humans when they are hunting.
